The Swedish government has adopted a program to fight tourism for child sex.

The action plan against the sexual exploitation of children places greater demands on travel companies to inform their customers about the issue. The TT news agency says that according to figures from 2005 around three million children around the world were the victims of sexual exploitation in connection with tourism.

Minister for Health and Social Affairs Göran Hägglund tells the newspaper “Dagens Nyheter” that no child in Sweden shall be the target of sexual exploitation, and no children in other countries shall be abused by people from Sweden.

The government also pledges to take up the issue within the European Union as well of at the Council of Europe, which Sweden will be chairing next year.
