New Barriers to Swedish Universities
New, tighter restrictions are to be applied for those applying for places in higher education in Sweden - starting in 2010.
The new system will benefit those coming directly from secondary schools and with good knowledge of languages.
This will work against those immigrant youngsters who have started to study Swedish late in life, the disabled with reduced study programs and those who’ve had to catch up on missing credits by signing up for extra studies.
Critics claim that this further reverses earlier efforts to open up the universities to all categories of students - and return Sweden to the days when it was mostly the children of parents with academic degrees who went on to higher education – leaving the working class behind.
