Swedish Women Can Now Say: "I’m not fat, I’m just big boned"

Published onsdag 27 februari 2008 kl 10.26

Swedish women have thicker bones than previously thought, this despite the fact that Swedes have one of the worst rates of hip fractures in older life.

Researchers, who have looked at bone thickness in a random sample of over 300 hundred women of all ages say they are surprised by their findings, which show that Swedish women have 5 percent more bone mass than a similar study carried out among American women.

The researchers now say that other factors than osteoporosis must lie behind the higher incidence of broken hips among Swedish women. They suggest that Swedish women may fall more often than women other countries. They are now looking at this in a large international study.
