Swede Dies In UN Helicopter Crash

Published tisdag 4 mars 2008 kl 10.23

A Swedish UN arms inspector was named amongst the dead following the crash of a UN helicopter that went down during bad weather whilst on a peackeeping mission in mountainous terrain in Eastern Nepal.

A UN spokesperson said there were 13 people on board, 12 of the bodies have so far been recovered.

Villagers reported seeing a ball of fire after the crash.

Nepalese authorities were unable to send rescue helicopters immediately to the area because of rain and darkness.

The United Nations has been helping Nepal’s peace process since 2006, when communist rebels gave up their armed revolt and joined mainstream politics.
