Oestrogen Hearing Loss Treatment

A new Swedish-Australian study indicates that hearing loss could be prevented with a simple hormone treatment.

The researchers studied the effects of the female sex hormone oestrogen on mice, and discovered that one of the two receptors it binds itself to offers good protection against hearing loss in both males and females.

Barbara Canlon of Stockholm’s Karolinska  Institute, one of the co-authors of the report, says it is the first to also look in the male ear and to pinpoint the receptor that protects against hearing loss.

Their findings are published in the “Journal of Clinical Investigation”.
