More Equality in the Home?

Published onsdag 5 mars 2008 kl 10.59

According to a new report the division of work in Swedish households is becoming more equal. But, Statistics Sweden says, this isn’t because men are doing more, it is because working women have less time to take care of the chores at home.

In the year 2000 Swedish women spent 40 minutes less per day on household work, compared to ten years before. The contribution of men remained unchanged.

The report does indicate that couples in Sweden are more equal than those in 15 other European countries. While Swedish men do 40 percent of all household work, their counterparts in Italy and Spain account for just 20 to 25 percent of the chores.
