Bildt First Foreign Minister to Visit Kosovo

Carl Bildt

This weekend Sweden’s Foreign Minister Carl Bildt became the first statesperson to visit the new state of Kosovo since its declaration of independence on February 17th.

After meeting with Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and President Fatmir Sejdiu Bildt told news agency TT they spoke about the importance of creating the right economical conditions to give hope to all of Kosovo’s citizens, particularly for the Serbs that remain there.

Serbia threatens to contest the new republic’s independence in the European High Court but Bildt believes that Sweden’s good contacts with both Belgrade in Serbia and Pristina in Kosovo should enable open discussion.

He hopes that when Serbia goes to the polls on May 11th, it will be an opportunity for Serbia to choose a European course more firmly than they’ve done so far.
