Guards Failed to Help Prisoner

Published torsdag 10 april 2008 kl 11.00
The jail in Mariestad

Swedish Radio reports that personnel at a provincial jail didn’t cut down a prisoner who had hanged himself, waiting instead for an ambulance.

When the ambulance arrived 9 minutes later, paramedics found the man still alive, but he died two days later because of his injuries. Critics say that had the Mariestad jail personnel acted when they made the discovery, the 23 year old prisoner might have survived.

On Tuesday Swedish Radio reported that three years ago guards at another provincial jail left a prisoner suffering from severe pneumonia in his cell without treatment over a weekend, until he died.
