Debate over Boycott Continues

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt

Sweden’s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt arrived in China on Friday where he will meet President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao.

Ahead of his one week trip to Asia, several politicians from both the governing and opposition parties have called on Reinfeldt to take up the human rights issue with the Chinese leaders. But Reinfeldt ruled out to determine whether or not he will address the topic.

Meanwhile, Sweden’s EU Minister Cecilia Malmström told daily ”Sydsvenska Dagbladet” the government would reserve its right not to send a high representative to the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in August.

For the time being, Sweden plans to send its Minister for Sports, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth to Beijing. According to government sources, it never was the intention that Prime Minister Reinfeldt would attend the ceremony.
