Sweden: Cut US, EU Farm Subsidies!

Published måndag 14 april 2008 kl 10.57

Sweden says both the United States and the European Union must cut farm subsidies - as a way of helping combat the rapid increase in food prices especially hitting the poorer populations on the globe.

Swedish development assistance authorities add that the use of more cereals for fuel production, greater demands for meat and climatic changes are also boosting prices - in some areas already leading to riots and conflicts.

The statements come in preparation work for top-level discussions in Rome under the auspices of United Nations food and agricultural agencies in coming weeks.

Sweden also says the UN bodies should help countries hard hit by drought and severe climate change to alter their agricultural policies to deal with different climatic conditions.
