Healthcare Workers Strike

Published måndag 21 april 2008 kl 11.55

Sweden’s healthcare professionals went on strike at noon Monday.

Brandishing placards that cried, ”I want to see what I do reflected in my pay packet!”  3,500 Swedish healthcare workers geared up this weekend for the strike which began Monday after negotiations broke down between employers and the Swedish Association of Healthcare Professionals on Saturday.

The union is demanding a 14 percent wage increase over two years.

In order to protect patients and not put Sweden into a situation of national distress, a central committee is now reviewing which of the nurses, midwives, biomedical researchers and radiographers are allowed to strike.

At the moment, 1,000 would-be strikers have been put on hold.
