No Local Veto on Refugees

Swedish refugee center

It’s been reported that in the future Swedish municipalities will probably not be allowed to block the opening of refugee centers.

Asylum seekers arriving in this country are housed at reception centers while their applications are being processed. But, while one city south of Stockholm has taken in more Iraqi refugees than the entire United States, a number of smaller towns have refused to open their doors.

The proposal to force municipalities to accept refugees comes, according to a magazine published by Sweden’s local authorities, in an official report to be released on Monday. A city counsellor representing the conservative Moderate party in one municipality in southern Sweden has criticised the proposal, pointing to a lack of local housing.
