Sweden Going Ahead with Lisbon Treaty

Published tisdag 17 juni 2008 kl 11.36

Meeting in Luxenburg, the Swedish and other EU foreign ministers are keeping a low profile on the question of Ireland’s rejection of the proposed Lisbon Treaty – waiting for the EU prime ministers to meet later in the week.

However, Sweden’s European minister Cecilia Malmström says that the center-right government here will go ahead as planned and hand over a proposal to approve the treaty to the Swedish parliament this fall.

Opposition parties here in Sweden have in vain been demanding a referendum on the treaty.
