More Christian Democrats O.K. Gender-Neutral Marriage

Published tisdag 17 juni 2008 kl 12.52

A new survey of the Swedish Christian Democratic Party shows that the outside show of solid opposition to the coming law for gender-neutral marriage is cracking - and that an increasing number of high-ranking party members say they have no problem at all with legally-binding church marriages for homosexual couples.

Although the party is one of the 4 members of the center-right coalition government, it’s the only party in parliament openly opposed to a change in the marriage law now limited to a male and female couple.

Some opponents claimed they would accept the legal change - if some other word than ”marriage” was found for the lesbians and gays.

Homosexual couples can be united under the present partnership law - which gives them the same rights except for a legally-binding ceremony in a church - a priviledge so far retained for a man and woman.
