Dead Sea Beds Rapidly Increasing

Published fredag 15 augusti 2008 kl 09.55

A Swedish-American study claims that pollution is destroying huge areas of the oceans’ sea beds - leaving large areas without oxygen or any life.

Swedish marine biologists say they have located 400 dead zones around the world - about the size of Great Britain - doubling in number every decade since the 60’s.

One of the hardest hit is the badly polluted Baltic Sea – especially sensitive because of the slow trickle of oxygen-rich sea water into the Baltic.

Blame is placed on the use of chemical fertilizers, exhaust fumes from traffic and sewage.
