Fatal Accident at Madrid Airport
The Spanish government says 153 people died after a plane belonging to a subsidiary of the Scandinavian Airlines swerved off the runway during take off at Madrid airport Wednesday.
Spanair flight JK 5022 was to have flown to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. There were reportedly around 170 people onboard. According to the Swedish Foreign Ministry there were at least two Swedes onboard. One Swedish woman is being treated in a Madrid hospital, one of 19 who were injured.
The situation of the other Swede is unknown.
In a press release SAS says it is doing everything possible to help passengers and next-of-kin and to assist the Spanish authorities. After holding a press conference in Copenhagen, SAS CEO Mats Jansson travelled with a crisis team to Madrid.
