Swedish Sailing Pair Miss Out On Gold
Sweden are still hunting for their first Olympic Gold in Beijing after another major hope disappointed early on Thursday.
Fredrik Lööf and Anders Ekström went into the final days medal race in the Star Class Sailing competition in first place with a two point lead over the British team after 10 preliminary races and were 14 points ahead of the Brazilians with the points counting double on the day.
But the Swedes fell off the pace after two legs, and trailed the 10-boat fleet to finish last. That meant a bronze medal, with Britain taking gold, having finished fifth, and the Brazilians, who finished third, taking silver.
Swedish hopes of a gold medal now rest with Carolina Kluft, the Olympic Heptathlon Champion in Athens, who’s competing in the final of the Long Jump. That competition takes place on Friday.
Meanwhile in table tennis, Sweden’s veteran Jorgen Persson, who has played in every Olympics since the sport was introduced at the 1988 Games, advanced into the last 16, defeating Hong Kong’s Cheung Yuk 4-1 .
