LO To Fight For Undocumented Workers Rights

Published torsdag 21 augusti 2008 kl 13.03

Sweden’s Trade Union Confederation says it’s going to actively fight against the discrimination of undocumented workers.

At their summer congress, led by the building maintenance workers union, members decided that measures should be taken to decriminalise the work status of undocumented migrants and find ways of protecting them from exploitation.

The confederation, or LO for short, wants the government to change the Swedish Aliens Act so that workers without work or residents permits will no longer be considered criminals.

LO believes that it’s the employer who should be punished.

Currently, it’s hard for the unions to help undocumented individual workers as they’re not eligible for union membership as this could lead to dismissal and deportation.
