Sweden has lost its last chance for track and field gold at the Beijing Olympics.

Carolina Klüft, who won the heptathlon at the 2004 Summer Games, switched events this time, but failed to reach the final round in the long jump, finishing 9th overall.

Sweden came close to winning its first gold in Beijing twice Thursday, but fell short both times.

Sweden’s Rolf-Göran Bengtsson tied for first in the Equestrian individual jumping event, with Canada’s Eric Lamaze. But the Swede’s horse Ninja missed the final obstacle in the jump-off, and took the silver medal.

Earlier Thursday the Swedish star class sailing pair lost their lead on the final day and ended up with bronze.
