Soldier Died After "Pretend Order"

The boat that entered the shooting exercises

The Swedish military says a soldier died during an exercise in May because he obeyed what is described as a “pretend order”.

The 20 year old conscript was ordered to take a boat he was on into an area where there was shooting with live ammunition. The official investigation into his death says the order was intended as a kind of role-playing and the soldier had been told ahead of time not to enter the area.

A spokesman for an organization representing draftees tells Swedish Radio News that neither he nor any of his colleagues have ever heard of a “pretend order” before.
