Half of World Food Lost

Published fredag 22 augusti 2008 kl 11.48
Half will disappear

According to experts meeting in Stockholm for World Water Week, some 20 million people in the European Union do not have access to decent toilets.

The head of the organization Women in Europe for a Common Future told the 2500 water and sanitation experts gathered here that while countries in the former Soviet bloc are the most affected, there are also isolated locations in Western Europe, including France and Ireland, that lack proper toilets.

Another report to the conference says the United States and some other developed countries throw away nearly a third of their food every year. According to the study by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Water Management Institute, and the Stockholm International Water Institute, half of all the food in the world disappears between the fields and the table.
