Swedish Greens Voting on EU Withdrawal

Published onsdag 3 september 2008 kl 10.17
Voting at the last Green Party Conference

8,000 members of the opposition Green Party here in Sweden are being asked if they want to cancel the party’s demand for Sweden’s withdrawal from the European Union.

The question has divided the party for years - with some arguing that the EU is not a good place to fight for a better environment and others insisting that this is the only such forum where some green decisions can be made – since it is so difficult to reach any agreement in the United Nations.

Others argue that the Greens will have to rip up this stand if they hope to join a future coalition government with the opposition Social Democrats - if the present center-right coalition can be defeated in the next elections.

The Green survey will continue throughout the month and the results are to be posted in October.
