The leader of the Social Democrats has criticised the Swedish foreign minister’s comments about Russia.

In an interview with Swedish Radio News at the weekend party leader Mona Sahlin damned Carl Bildt’s comparison between Russia and Nazi Germany.

Writing in his blog, Bildt said that Hitler had used a similar doctrine to undermine and attack central Europe half a century ago.

Sahlin criticised the statement as not attempting to find a long-term solution to the current situation in Georgia.

His comments do not persuade Russia to either withdraw their troops or help to create a new style of politics in Eastern Europe, she said.

Bildt has in the past been commended for his role as mediator during the Balkans conflict in the early 1990s.
