More Companies Fail to Pay Wages

In November builders who were cheated of their wages occupied a construction site in Stockholm

The economic crisis means that more Swedish companies are having problems paying wages.

And so the unions are taking employers to court in far greater numbers

According to the main union federations LO and TCO the number of such cases has risen by 40 percent this year to reach 139.

Swedish public radio talked to one worker whose employer is locked in an internal dispute but has not declared bankruptcy.

This means the employees are still officially in work and cannot claim benefits.

And union leaders say the numbers affected by non-payment could be far higher if people not in a union are included.
