Sweden’s smallest coin on the way out
Sweden’s Central Bank has announced plans to abolish the fifty-öre coin. A spokesman said that statistics showed that people used the half-crown less and less, so the country’s smallest coin should be withdrawn from circulation. Only a few years ago all fifty-öre coins, which then consisted of a nickel alloy, had been replaced by copper coins. At current exchange rates the half-crown is worth less than a dime.
