Longer prison terms for serious crimes?

Published torsdag 18 december 2008 kl 11.05
Life behind bars

The government wants longer prison terms for a number of crimes. According to plans of the justice ministry jail times for second-degree murder and manslaughter should be extended to a maximum of eighteen years instead of the current ten years.

The prolonged prison terms should also apply to terrorist activities, espionage, and arson. The punishment for first-degree murder remains lifetime. However, in many cases such sentences are reduced to terms between eighteen and twenty-five years.
