Warships on Bodyguard Duty

Published måndag 22 december 2008 kl 11.47
The ships deployed will be of the light and fast Corvette class

Sweden is sending warships to the coast of Africa from next year.

Their mission is to protect the World Food program’s shipments.

Over the last few years hijacking of ships by pirates based in Somalia has become a serious danger.

The corvettes Stockholm and Malmö plus their support vessel Trossö will be on patrol for up to four months, in an expedition that could cost close to 37 million USD.

But the 160 Swedish sailors are not going to be hunting for pirates, but only protecting the United Nations aid transports.
