The Nordic region’s first Romany people’s school has been proposed by the cultural committee of Västra Götaland county.

The Romany people are an official minority in Sweden, with the right to official material in their own language.

The county of Västra Götaland includes Sweden’s second city of Gothenburg.

The leader of the local culture committee says that such a school would help deal with high Romany rates of illiteracy and also unemployment.

Sweden’s Council for Popular Adult Education will now decide whether to offer state aid to the project, which could be underway by the start of 2010.
