The city of Höganäs in southern Sweden has adopted the euro as parallel currency to the country’s crown. Since the start of the new year most Höganäs shops and restaurants deal with the euro. In addition, the local authorities have announced that they will accept the euro as legal tender for paying bills and fees.
To underline the significance of the initiative, Höganäs has been officially proclaimed ’Eurocity’. Local politicians of the governing conservative Moderate Party said they hoped that this would contribute to eventually replacing the crown with the euro as Sweden’s currency.
