Carlsson calls for suspension of Gaza hostilities
The minister for international development cooperation, Gunilla Carlsson, is calling for an immediate suspension of armed hostilities in and around the Gaza strip. Carlsson said that a ceasefire was imperative in order to enable humanitarian help for the civilian population in the conflict area. She also said that the only way to solve the crisis was a political dialogue between the hostile parties. The minister renewed the pledge for continuing humanitarian aid to the Palestinians within the framework of international help organisations.
Foreign minister Carl Bildt has announced that he will fly to Cairo on Sunday, together with his colleagues from France and the Czech Republic. After consultations with the Egyptian leadership the three ministers plan to hold talks in Jerusalem and Ramallah with representatives of Israel and the Palestinians.
