New Year’s Incidents

New Year’s start marred by harmful incidents

Published fredag 2 januari 2009 kl 12.42
Cause unknown - one of many home fires

Swedish New Year’s celebrations were overshadowed by more incidents than in earlier years. Police spokesmen said that seven people lost their lives and scores were injured due to acts of violence and mostly alcohol-related accidents. Several fires were caused by careless handling of candles and fireworks.

In the most serious of these incidents a two-year-old boy perished in an apartment house blaze near Sunne in central Sweden.
