Tough Times for Socialist Youth
The Social Democrats’ youth wing is facing a membership crisis and must find other ways to get young people involved.
Party Secretary Marita Ulvskog says that they hope to build on broad links with sympathetic groups and networks.
In 1970 the Social Democrats’s youth group had 66,000 members, in 1999 23,000 but it now stands at only 2,000.
And one of the main reasons is the house clearning that followed a fraud scandal, where youth leaders were found to be reporting higher membership levels than reality, in order to qualify for more money.
The Social Democrats are still officially Sweden’s biggest party, with almost twice the members of their closest rival.
