Sweden Handles Northern EU Fishing

Published onsdag 7 januari 2009 kl 12.00

Sweden has agreed to take over responsibility for the EU’s fishing and environmental questions in the Baltic Sea region and in northern European waters - 6 months earlier than when Stockholm takes over the rotating EU presidency in July.

With no as sea coast of its own, the current president – the Czech Republic has also turned over such questions for southern Europe to former president France.

Environmentalists hoping that Sweden will push for a total ban on Baltic Cod fishing are expected to be disappointed - with Sweden saying that it will work for limited quotas to stop over over fishing but not total bans.
