Police Shoot Dead Knifeman

Published måndag 26 januari 2009 kl 12.47
The Skånsk town of Trelleborg, Monday

A man was shot dead by police in the southern Swedish town of Trelleborg on Sunday night after calling police and then attacking them with a knife.

The man was known to police from similar incidents before the fatal shooting. Neighbours say that he had terrorised them with daily threats and erratic behaviour ever since he moved in last May.

Now investigations focus on how police can deal with such seriously psychologically disturbed people without resorting to lethal force..

Every year Swedish police shoot four people on average, one fatally. Last year the number rose to eight, but according to a national police spokesperson, this is just a temporary blip.
