More Cuts in Swedish Defense
Swedish news reports maintain that the commander in chief plans to announce a reduction of a third of the armed forces and half of the nation’s tanks and other armoured vehicles – and cut the number of jet fighters and naval vessels.
The cutbacks are motivated by a government demand that that all troops must be ready for fast action - requiring budget reductions.
The number of troops and officers ready for battle will be cut from the present 20,000 to only 12,500.
This comes after a long list of earlier cut backs in the Swedish military spending and is designed to co-incide with the government’s latest freeze on defense expenditures lasting until the year 2014.
The announcement expected this Friday will once again threaten a number of military bases which survived the last cut backs.
