Patients at Risk in Swedish Psychiatric Care

Published måndag 2 februari 2009 kl 15.00

The Staff at Swedish Psychiatric wards use questionable methods in order to control patients, according to a report by Swedish Radio News. In restraining patients, staff frequently place them stomach down on the ground and apply pressure on their backs to keep them still.

This is a procedure which the police abandoned over ten years ago, when international research established the risks involved. Pressure applied to the back while in such a position can result in breathing difficulties. Police are still investigating two cases from last year when two patients died after being subjected to this treatment.
