New Committee for Gender Equality at Universities

Published måndag 9 februari 2009 kl 13.01

The government has appointed a special committee to pursue the goal of equal opportunities at Sweden’s colleges and universities. Statistics show that even though male students score less when it comes to taking academic degrees they outnumber female teachers and professors.

The new equal opportunities’ committee is led by Pia Sandvik Wiklund, dean of Luleå’s technical university. Her task is to encourage representation of genders reflecting students’ achievements when it comes to appointing academic functionaries. Colleges who follow the guidelines are eligible for rewards. They will be paid from the committee’s budget of seven million dollars.
