Israeli Security at Swedish Sporting Event?
Armed Israeli security guards could be present at the Davis Cup tennis Match between Sweden and Israel in March.
The police have confirmed to Swedish News Agency TT that although nothing has been decided the question has been discussed within the Police as well as with the Foreign Office and the Israeli embassy.
Generally Swedish Police are responsible for domestic security and foreign police is not allowed to operate within Sweden’s borders. However, there are exceptions in the case of state visits and similar.
If Israeli security wishes to be armed they will need a special permission from local police. Critics, against such a permit, say that the police would find themselves in a legal vacuum if any of the foreign guards would fire their weapon and injure someone. Immunity regulations would not allow them to be prosecuted in Sweden.
All ticket sales for the controversial match are postponed for the time being and several demonstrations and protests are expected in Malmö, according to TT.
