Overweight as Risky as Smoking

Published onsdag 25 februari 2009 kl 10.35

Swedish medical researchers report that being overweight while young increases the chances of early death, by as much as smoking up to 10 cigarettes a day.

Moreover, people who are obese by the age of 18 face more than double that risk.

The study was based on 45,000 Swedish conscripts in 1969 and 1970, and followed them up to 2007.

It also found that combining the two factors of weight and smoking accumulates the risk. An obese heavy smoker is nearly five times as likely to die prematurely as a normal weight non-smoker.

The study is published in the “British Medical Journal”.
