Arson Attacks Shock Södertälje

Published torsdag 26 februari 2009 kl 16.41
Södertälje on Thursday morning

Three supermarkets were destroyed and one damaged after what is believed to be arson attacks in the early hours of Thursday, in Södertälje, just south of Stockholm.

After similar attacks in the area in December, responsibility was claimed by an ultra left wing organisation called Global Intifada. Flyers and posters had been distributed in the area before Christmas urging people to boycott several stores for selling American goods. There were also instructions on how to best construct a fire bomb with a delay time of 20 – 50 minutes.

At a press conference on Thursday the police revealed that the attacks are now being investigated by the County Criminal Investigation Department rather than local police. Investigators were unwilling to say which organisations they believe to be behind Thursday’s attacks. However, they did confirm that just like in December - there were no signs of breaking in, and that in all stores the fire started in the crisps-aisle.

Between 75 and 100 fire fighters from Stockholm, and nearby towns of Uppsala and Enköping took part in the operation to stop the fire from spreading.
