Surveillance

MI5 Spied on Swedish Actress

Published tisdag 3 mars 2009 kl 13.34

It has been revealed that the British secret service MI5 had Swedish actress Mai Zetterling under surveillance during the 1940’s and 50’s. The actress was suspected of having Communist leanings, according to documents recently made public.

Mai Zetterling started her career in London in 1948. She took part in about 20 film productions in the UK.  Living in South London she joined a study circle which was believed by MI5 to be a recruiting ground for new members to the Communist Party. Among other things MI5 mapped out what kind of books the actress read – just in case it involved Communist literature.

Mai Zetterling died in London in 1994, age 69. The National Archive documents containing information about her were made public after being classified for 50 years.
