Cobbles outside Baltic Stadium

The heaps of cobble stones stacked close to the Baltic Stadium and threatening Police security during the upcoming Davis Cup tennis match are now  removed.

Police Safety Representative Kaj Svensson said Wednesday that he would call off all police presence in the area if the stones weren’t taken away by Thursday afternoon.

“It may sound dramatic- but I can’t risk my colleagues lives”, he said to Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

On Thursday morning Svensson inspected the site and found that the majority of the offending stones had gone. The builders in the area  promised that the rest would be removed during the day, something Svensson welcomes.

“The police will be able to do their job now,. It is important to be clear in your demands,” Svensson said to Sydsvenskan. “

According to the head of street management in Malmö, Rolf Jonsson, the removal has been planned for some time.

“At the same time we wanted to let the work in the area go on for as long as possible,” Jonsson told Sydsvenskan.
