Tension Mounting in Malmö

Published torsdag 5 mars 2009 kl 18.27

Pressure is building up in the Southern Swedish city of Malmö ahead of this weekend’s disputed Davis Cup tennis match between Sweden and Israel.

Earlier, Malmö police had threatened not to guard the event unless local authorities removed unused cobblestones, which they feared could be used as ammunition by rioters.

Some local politicians in Malmö have protested against the match because of Israel’s recent attacks against the Palestinians in Gaza. Up to ten thousand anti-match demonstrators are expected in the city over the weekend. We’ll have more on this in tomorrow’s programme.
