New Talks On Medical Care of the Dying

Published onsdag 11 mars 2009 kl 12.31

Swedish social welfare authorities are calling for an emergency meeting of the doctors’, nurses’ and other hospital workers’ unions to discuss care for the dying - following the case of a Swedish doctor accused of murdering a fatally ill infant.

Prosecutors and doctors have been fiercely debating the question in the media here after the doctor was temporarily detained and is still suspected of giving the brain-damaged baby a fatal injection.

Some have argued that this is normal practice in trying to reach a balance between relieving pain and providing too heavy of a dose, while others claim this was a question of a deliberate overdose.

Euthenasia or mercy killing is illegal in this Scandinavian country.
