Swedes Prepare For Portugal Clash

Coach Lars Lagerbäck

Sweden’s footballers face a big weekend when the national side takes on Portugal in Porto in a vital World Cup qualifier. Saturday evening’s game could go a long way in deciding who’ll top the qualifying group and go through to the finals in South Africa next summer.

Many people’s favourites before qualification, Portugal have struggled under new coach Carlos Queiroz who’s been under mounting pressure in his second spell in charge of the national side. Sweden and Portugal drew in Stockholm earlier this year. The Swedes for their part have also endured a stuttering campaign so far as coach Lars Lagerbäck rebuilds his ageing team after a disappointing European Championship. They’re fifth in Group One with five points after three games. Portugal also have five points after four games, two points behind leaders Denmark. Lagerbäck will be without star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic who’s out through suspension and veteran striker Henrik Larsson is back in the squad. Galatasaray midfielder Tobias Linderoth and Malmo midfielder Daniel Andersson are also out with injuries.
