Researchers in Sweden "Lose" Conscript Statistics

Published måndag 30 mars 2009 kl 13.30
Better than average condition?

Swedish researchers say they fear they are losing the chances of carrying out large-scale and inexpensive surveys of the Swedish state of health – because of the dwindling number of young men called in to do their military service.

Because of defense cut-backs, fewer and fewer young men are being asked to come in for their medicals before donning those uniforms.

This means that those once rich piles of statistics about weight, size, health and physical condition are no longer reliable – especially since it’s estimated that many of those volunteering for service are in better-than average condition –  no longer reflecting reality in this age of over-weight and exercise-lazy.
