Unpaid Blog, No Unemployment Benefits
A former Volvo employee has been told he might lose his unemployment benefits because he is an unpaid blogger.
The man is blogging for the online edition of the newspaper “Smålandsposten”, without compensation. But he has been told by the unemployment insurance office at the metal workers union that his benefits will be cut-off unless he stops his online activities.
Talking to the newspaper he asks if that also means he might lose benefits if he continues as an unpaid coach for a local kids sports team.
Swedish unemployment insurance is administered by trade unions rather than by central authorities. A spokesman for the Swedish Federation of Unemployment Insurance Funds tells the TT news agency that he finds the union’s message strange. He compares a blog to a diary, and says he’s never heard of anyone losing unemployment benefits for writing a diary. (gw)
