Few Willing to Sponsor Sweden
The Swedish Civil Service is having problems attracting sponsors for the upcoming EU presidency. So far only Volvo has expressed an interest compared to ten major companies 2001.
Sponsors are not allowed to contribute with money – but can give support to officials in terms of providing Swedish goods and services.
In 2001 the sponsors included Scandinavian Airlines, electronics expert Ericsson and pharmaceutical giant Pharmacia. None of these have expressed an interest this time.
According to the Civil Service the reluctance to be a sponsor is due to the current financial situation as well as a sharpening of the rules regarding brand exposure for the sponsors. (rm)
