Non-Swedish Residents to Get ID Cards

Published fredag 3 april 2009 kl 17.24
Soon for everyone

Non-Swedish residents of this Nordic nation are finally to get their own ID cards – ending their nightmare situation where they have been unable to produce an ID for such standard services as making bank withdrawals, renting a video or buying a bottle of wine in the state-run alcohol hops and much more.

These days, only banks and the police produce ID cards for Swedes – and refuse to hand out new cards unless you already have one – a Catch-22 situation for the new-comers.

Recognizing the problem after the demise of the small retain cashier service that used to issue  ID cards, the Swedish government has asked the National Tax Board to issue cards to non –Swedes over the age of 13 and official registered here – with that national personal identity number.

This service starts on June 1st.
