Swedish Pigs a Cause for Rainforest Burning?

Published måndag 6 april 2009 kl 11.28
Do soybeans make hogs happy?

The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, SSNC, has urged the country’s livestock farmers to go back to feeding domestic products like peas and potatoes to pigs. In an article on sustainable agriculture the Nature Conservation Society criticized replacing traditional feeds with soy products from countries like Brazil.

SSNC argued that the rising demand for soy bean products had caused burning down large portions of the rain forest in the Amazon region to make room for soy bean cultivation. Thus, Sweden was contributing to the destruction of the rainforest and to an increase of the greenhouse effect, the article said. (KH)
